Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.

Here's the basic idea with your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Sprintec, and similar combos of ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate). Lab and animal studies suggest Evodia can speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process certain medicines. When that enzyme runs faster, some drugs get cleared out of your body more quickly, so their levels drop.

For a birth control pill, lower hormone levels could mean it works less reliably, which raises a theoretical concern about breakthrough bleeding or even reduced pregnancy protection. I want to be honest though: this is based mostly on test tube and animal research, not solid human studies, so we don't know how much it matters in real life. Since this is about preventing pregnancy, I'd play it safe and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.

Here's the key thing to understand about this particular pairing: the interaction on file runs in one direction only. Your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate combo) is processed in the liver partly by an enzyme called CYP3A4. Because your pill can mildly slow that same enzyme, the concern is that it could let evodia's natural compounds build up, not the other way around.

So in plain terms, evodia might stick around longer in your body and have stronger effects than expected. This is based only on animal and test-tube research, so it's theoretical and not well proven in people. Importantly, nothing here says your pill becomes less effective at preventing pregnancy. Still, since evodia isn't well studied, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Here's the key thing to notice about this one: the interaction runs toward the supplement, not your birth control. Your pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen and similar) can mildly slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which happens to be the same enzyme that breaks down one of Evodia's active compounds (rutaecarpine). So in theory, taking them together could let Evodia build up a bit and act stronger than expected.
