Why this applies to Norfloxacin

Norfloxacin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.

Here the concern runs in the opposite direction from what you might expect. It isn't your Norfloxacin that builds up. Instead, Norfloxacin can act as a mild blocker of the liver enzyme CYP3A4, and that same enzyme helps clear the active compounds in evodia (like evodiamine and rutaecarpine). So taking them together could let the evodia compounds linger longer and reach higher levels in your body, which may mean stronger effects from the herb itself.

I'll be honest, this is mostly theoretical and comes from lab and animal studies, not human trials, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since evodia's effects in people aren't well understood, it's worth running this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
The evodia constituent rutaecarpine is metabolized by CYP1A2.

Here the medicine is the one doing the blocking, not the other way around. Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Evodia contains a compound (rutaecarpine) that this same enzyme normally breaks down. So if you take them together, Norfloxacin may let evodia's compounds build up a bit higher than usual, which could make any of evodia's effects (or side effects) stronger.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab and animal studies, not on real patient cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since evodia itself is poorly studied, the safest move is to mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.
