PHENYTOIN (Dilantin)

Theoretically, fenugreek might decrease plasma levels of phenytoin.
Animal research shows that taking fenugreek seeds for 1 week decreases maximum concentrations and the area under the curve of a single dose of phenytoin by 44% and 72%, respectively. This seems to be related to increased clearance. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with fenugreek and phenytoin: the worry is that fenugreek as a supplement might lower the amount of phenytoin in your blood. In animal studies, fenugreek seemed to speed up how fast the body cleared phenytoin, dropping its levels quite a bit. If that happened in a person, the concern would be too little phenytoin to do its job, which could mean breakthrough seizures.

I want to keep this in perspective though. This is only seen in animal research so far, and it has never been reported in people. Phenytoin is also a tricky drug where small changes in blood level matter a lot. The sprinkle of fenugreek in cooking is unlikely to be an issue, but concentrated supplement doses are worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Phenytoin

What Is Phenytoin Used For?

Brand names: Dilantin Kapseals, Dilantin, Di-Phen, Dilantin Infatabs, Phenytek, Dilantin injection

Phenytoin is used to treat and prevent seizures. The specific types covered depend on the formulation. Oral extended-release capsules (including Phenytek), chewable tablets (including Dilantin Infatabs and Phenytoin Infatabs), and oral suspension (including Dilantin-125) are used for tonic-clonic (grand mal) and psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures; most oral forms also cover prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or after neurosurgery. Chewable tablets and some capsule formulations also cover complex partial seizures.

Parenteral (injectable) phenytoin sodium is used for generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus (a prolonged, life-threatening seizure emergency) and for prevention and treatment of seizures during neurosurgery. The IV form can also substitute short-term for oral phenytoin when a patient cannot take it by mouth.
