Cefpodoxime Proxetil falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of fermented milk.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this one runs the other way from what people usually worry about. Cefpodoxime won't be weakened by fermented milk. Instead, the antibiotic may knock out some of the live probiotic bacteria (like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) in yogurt, kefir, or similar drinks while you're taking it. So it's the supplement's benefit that takes the hit, not your treatment.

This is a theoretical concern based on how antibiotics work, not a proven, dangerous problem. A practical fix is to space them out by about 2 hours. The food and calcium are fine; cefpodoxime can still cause its own usual stomach upset or diarrhea. If you're using probiotics on purpose, just ask your pharmacist about timing.

What Is Cefpodoxime Used For?

Brand name: Vantin

Cefpodoxime Proxetil treats mild to moderate bacterial infections in both adults and children. It is used for ear infections (acute otitis media), strep throat and tonsillitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, acute sinus infections (acute maxillary sinusitis), uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis), and uncomplicated gonorrhea.

For gonorrhea, Cefpodoxime Proxetil treats uncomplicated urethral and cervical infections in men and women, and uncomplicated ano-rectal infections in women. It has not been shown effective for throat (pharyngeal) gonorrhea infections in men or women, or for rectal gonorrhea in men.
