ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Telavancin
Telavancin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction works in one direction, and it's the fermented milk that loses out, not your antibiotic. Telavancin is a powerful injected antibiotic that kills bacteria, and it can't tell the difference between the bugs causing your infection and the friendly probiotic strains (like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) found in yogurt or kefir. So those live cultures may simply get wiped out, meaning you don't get the gut benefits you were hoping for.
The good news is this is mostly theoretical, based on how antibiotics behave, and it won't make your telavancin any weaker or more risky. If you enjoy fermented milk, just try to space it apart from your antibiotic. Your doctor or pharmacist can confirm the best timing for you.

About Telavancin Injection
What Is Telavancin Injection Used For?
Brand name: Vibativ
Vibativ (telavancin) injection is used to treat two types of serious bacterial infections in adults. The first is complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI) — deep or serious skin infections caused by certain gram-positive bacteria, including both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as well as some Streptococcus and Enterococcus species.
Vibativ is also approved for hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP) caused by susceptible Staphylococcus aureus. For pneumonia, Vibativ should only be used when other treatments are not suitable. It is not meant for infections that are not caused by bacteria, and it should only be used when an infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
