EZETIMIBE (Zetia)

Concomitant use of flaxseed oil and ezetimibe reduces the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseed oil.
In one clinical study, concomitant consumption of ezetimibe 10 mg daily with flaxseed oil 2 grams providing 1 gram of alpha-linolenic acid daily blocked the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid, resulting in an overall reduction in alpha-linolenic plasma levels from baseline.

Here's a twist on the usual interaction question: in this pairing, it's actually your flaxseed oil that takes the hit, not your medication. Your combo pill, Liptruzet, contains ezetimibe, which works by blocking cholesterol absorption in your gut. The catch is that it doesn't only block cholesterol, it can also block your body from soaking up the healthy omega-3 (ALA) in flaxseed oil. A small clinical study showed ezetimibe basically wiped out the rise in ALA blood levels you'd normally expect.

The good news is your atorvastatin and ezetimibe should still work fine for lowering your cholesterol. You just may not get the full omega-3 benefit you were hoping for from the flax. If that benefit matters to you, chat with your pharmacist about timing or alternatives.
