Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have sedative effects. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

B & O Supprettes combine belladonna and opium, and the opium part is a real central nervous system depressant. That means it can already cause drowsiness, slowed breathing, dizziness, and grogginess. The concern here is that goldenseal contains berberine, which has shown mild sedative effects in animal studies. Stacking something calming on top of an opioid could, in theory, leave you more sleepy or foggy than expected.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical. This added sedation has not actually been seen in people, so I'm not raising alarms. Still, since this medicine can affect breathing, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with goldenseal.
