Here's the gist with Xanax (alprazolam) and gotu kola: this herb isn't changing how your body breaks the drug down. Instead, the concern is that gotu kola may have its own mild calming effect by acting on GABA receptors in the brain, the same general system Xanax works on. Stack those two together and you could feel more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than usual.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical interaction based mostly on lab and animal data, so it's not something I'd panic over. Still, if you notice extra sleepiness, slowed thinking, or poor coordination, that's your cue. Don't change your Xanax on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with gotu kola.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
