There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Here's the short version on combining gotu kola with your birth control pill (Nextstellis, which contains drospirenone and estetrol). The concern isn't about gotu kola changing your hormone levels or making the pill weaker. Instead, it's about the liver. Birth control pills are processed by your liver, and in rare cases they can stress it. Gotu kola has been linked to a handful of reported cases of liver irritation too, so the worry is that the two together might add up and be a little harder on your liver.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical, based on only a few anecdotal reports. For most people it's a low concern. Still, watch for signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you already have liver issues.
