There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol combo): the concern isn't about how well it works or how it's broken down. Instead, it's about your liver. Both this pill and gotu kola can, in rare cases, put a little stress on the liver. The worry is that using them together might add up and irritate your liver more than either one alone.

That said, this is pretty theoretical. It comes from just a handful of case reports where gotu kola was tied to liver trouble, and we can't even be sure gotu kola was truly the cause. Still, if you ever notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual fatigue, check in with your doctor. It's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before combining these.
