Gotu Kola and Lomefloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Lomefloxacin

Lomefloxacin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Gotu Kola interacts with.

Theoretically, taking gotu kola with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects.
There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both gotu kola and lomefloxacin can, in rare cases, be hard on your liver. Lomefloxacin is an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family, and like many antibiotics it occasionally stresses the liver. Gotu kola has a handful of case reports linking it to liver trouble too. The worry is that using them together might add up and put a little more strain on your liver than either one alone.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. It's theoretical and based only on a few anecdotal reports, so this is far from a sure thing. Still, if you ever notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, stop and call your doctor. Before combining them, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

  • Wound healing
  • Varicose veins and poor circulation
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Memory and mental clarity
  • Skin health and scarring

Gotu kola is a traditional Ayurvedic and Asian herb that people use for wound healing, circulation, skin problems, and as a calming or memory-supporting herb. Some early studies suggest possible benefits for vein health and skin, but the overall evidence is limited and not strong. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver problems.
