Here's the gist with Gotu Kola and Vigabatrin (Sabril). Both can have a calming, drowsy effect on the brain. Vigabatrin already works by quieting abnormal electrical activity, and one of its common side effects is sleepiness or fatigue. Gotu kola, in lab studies, seems to gently nudge GABA receptors too, so the worry is that stacking the two together might add up to extra drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real patient cases, so it's far from certain. Vigabatrin isn't a prodrug, so this is about overlapping sedation, not changing how the drug is cleared. Still, before adding gotu kola, please run it by your pharmacist or neurologist.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
