Grape and Codeine Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Codeine Sulfate

Codeine Sulfate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Grape interacts with.

Theoretically, grape seed extract may increase the levels of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that grape seed extract might inhibit CYP2D6 enzymes. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the twist with codeine: it's a prodrug, meaning it doesn't do much on its own. Your body has to convert it into morphine using an enzyme called CYP2D6, and that morphine is what actually relieves your pain. So this enzyme is the key that switches codeine 'on.'

Lab studies hint that concentrated grape seed extract might slow down CYP2D6. If that happened in a real person, it could mean less of your codeine gets turned into morphine, so you might get weaker pain relief. The good news: this is only test-tube evidence and hasn't been seen in actual people, and eating grapes as food shouldn't matter. Still, if you take a grape seed supplement, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
