Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Targiniq ER pairs oxycodone, a strong opioid pain reliever, with naloxone, which is added to discourage misuse. The oxycodone part already slows the brain down, which is why it can cause drowsiness, slowed breathing, dizziness, and a foggy or sleepy feeling. Griffonia seed extract supplies 5-HTP, and in studies 5-HTP has made people feel drowsy too.

Putting them together could, in theory, stack one sedating effect on top of another, leaving you more sluggish or sleepier than usual. This concern is based on how the two work, not on solid human studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with an opioid on board, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oxycodone, Naloxone page

“Targiniq ER combines the opioid oxycodone with naloxone for around-the-clock pain, and because opioids can dangerously slow breathing once sedation stacks up, the 145 supplements on file here deserve genuine respect, above all the eight rated major. The largest group, 78 ingredients, layers drowsiness onto the opioid's own, with alcoho…”

About Griffonia Simplicifolia

What is Griffonia Simplicifolia?

Griffonia Simplicifolia
  • Low mood
  • Sleep problems
  • Anxiety
  • Appetite control
  • Headaches

Griffonia simplicifolia is a West African shrub whose seeds are a natural source of 5-HTP, a building block of the brain chemical serotonin. Some people use it for mood, sleep, and appetite, but high-quality human evidence is limited, and it should not replace prescribed treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take medicines that affect serotonin.
