Here's the simple version: Griffonia seeds supply 5-HTP, which in studies has been linked to drowsiness and sleepiness. Topiramate can also make people feel foggy, tired, or slow to think. Put the two together and that mellow, drowsy feeling could stack up, so you might notice more fatigue, trouble concentrating, or sluggishness than usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical, based on how each works rather than real-world reports of problems with this exact pair. So please don't panic. But if you're already taking topiramate for seizures or migraine, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Griffonia, and don't change your topiramate on your own.

What Is Topiramate Used For?

Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia

  • Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
