Here's the gist: trimipramine (Surmontil) is a tricyclic antidepressant that nudges serotonin levels up in your brain. Griffonia seed extract supplies 5-HTP, which your body turns into more serotonin. Stack the two together and you can end up with too much serotonin activity at once.

When serotonin runs high, you may notice things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion. In rare cases this becomes serotonin syndrome, which is a medical emergency. To be honest, this warning is theoretical, based on how both substances work rather than firm patient studies, so the real-world risk is likely low for most people. Still, please don't add Griffonia to your trimipramine without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
