These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Griffonia Simplicifolia interacts with whole categories of medication. Lofepramine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Griffonia Simplicifolia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Lofepramine
Lofepramine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Griffonia Simplicifolia interacts with.
Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract contains 5-HTP. In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Lofepramine is a tricyclic antidepressant, and on its own it can already make some people feel drowsy or a bit foggy, especially when you first start it. Griffonia seed extract supplies 5-HTP, which has been linked to sleepiness in studies. So the concern here is simple: stacking the two could add up and leave you more tired, slower to react, or groggy than you'd expect.
I'll be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how these things work, not strong proof from real-world cases, so it isn't a reason to panic. There's also a separate, broader point worth a mention: combining serotonin-boosting supplements with antidepressants raises the topic of serotonin overload. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these, rather than starting or stopping anything yourself.

ANTIDEPRESSANT DRUGS
2 of 2Lofepramine also falls under ANTIDEPRESSANT DRUGS.
Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract contains 5-HTP. Taking 5-HTP with antidepressant drugs increases the risk of serotonergic adverse effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: Lofepramine is a tricyclic antidepressant that raises serotonin activity in your brain. Griffonia seed extract supplies 5-HTP, which your body turns into more serotonin. Stack the two together and you're pushing serotonin from two directions at once, which can be too much of a good thing.
The worry is a reaction called serotonin syndrome, with signs like agitation, sweating, a racing heart, shivering, tremor, or confusion. To be fair, this concern is theoretical and based on how these substances work, not on solid human studies, so it's a caution rather than a certainty. Still, I wouldn't combine them on your own. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding Griffonia.

About Griffonia Simplicifolia
What is Griffonia Simplicifolia?
- Low mood
- Sleep problems
- Anxiety
- Appetite control
- Headaches
Griffonia simplicifolia is a West African shrub whose seeds are a natural source of 5-HTP, a building block of the brain chemical serotonin. Some people use it for mood, sleep, and appetite, but high-quality human evidence is limited, and it should not replace prescribed treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take medicines that affect serotonin.
