Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Groundsel interacts with.

Theoretically, taking CYP3A4 inducers with groundsel might increase the risk of pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicity, such as hepatotoxicity.
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, constituents of groundsel, are converted to toxic metabolites by CYP3A4.

Here's the thing with this pairing: it's not really about your modafinil getting weaker or stronger. The concern runs the other way. Groundsel contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, plant chemicals that are genuinely toxic to the liver. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to turn those compounds into their harmful forms, and modafinil tends to speed that enzyme up. So in theory, taking modafinil could ramp up the production of groundsel's liver-damaging byproducts.

I'll be honest, this is based on lab and animal data, not real people, so it's theoretical. But groundsel is unsafe to swallow on its own, and we don't recommend it regardless. Please skip the groundsel and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything new with modafinil.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
