Oxcarbazepine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Groundsel interacts with.

Theoretically, taking CYP3A4 inducers with groundsel might increase the risk of pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicity, such as hepatotoxicity.
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, constituents of groundsel, are converted to toxic metabolites by CYP3A4.

First things first: I really wouldn't take groundsel at all. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can damage your liver, and there's no good evidence it actually helps with anything. With oxcarbazepine there's an extra wrinkle worth knowing about. Oxcarbazepine can speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that's the same enzyme that turns groundsel's toxic compounds into their harmful form. So in theory, your seizure medicine could ramp up the very process that makes groundsel poisonous to the liver, raising the chance of liver injury.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not on people. Still, given groundsel's real liver risk, I'd skip it entirely. Please run any herbal product past your pharmacist or doctor before using it alongside your oxcarbazepine.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
