Treprostinil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Guarumo interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of guarumo leaf can lower blood pressure when administered intravenously to rats. Theoretically, concomitant use of antihypertensive drugs with guarumo might enhance therapeutic effects and increase the risk of hypotension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: Treprostinil (Orenitram) widens your blood vessels to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, and one of its built-in effects is lowering blood pressure. Guarumo tea has been shown in animal studies to also nudge blood pressure down. So if you stack the two together, the worry is that your blood pressure could dip too low.

What that might feel like is dizziness, lightheadedness, a headache, flushing, or feeling faint when you stand up, which are already common Treprostinil side effects. I'll be honest with you though: this is only based on lab and animal research, not real human cases, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding guarumo, since they'll want to watch your blood pressure.

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. About Treprostinil

What Is Treprostinil Used For?

Treprostinil treats pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. Depending on the product and route, it is used to improve exercise ability, delay disease progression, or reduce symptoms tied to physical activity. Remodulin and treprostinil injection products are also indicated for patients who need to transition away from another PAH medicine called epoprostenol.

Tyvaso, Tyvaso DPI, and Yutrepia (inhaled forms) are additionally approved to treat pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3) — lung-pressure problems caused by scarring or inflammation in the lung tissue itself. Orenitram (extended-release oral tablet) is specifically indicated to delay disease progression and improve exercise capacity in PAH.
