Guarumo and Semaglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Semaglutide

Semaglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Guarumo interacts with.

Some clinical evidence suggests that drinking tea prepared with guarumo leaf might lower blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Theoretically, guarumo might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy). Guarumo tea has been shown in some small studies to gently nudge blood sugar downward in people with type 2 diabetes. Since your semaglutide is already working to lower your blood sugar, drinking guarumo on top of it could add to that effect. The concern isn't a chemical clash, it's simply two things pushing in the same direction.

If your sugar drops too low, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually hungry. This is more of a concern if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. The evidence here is limited, so don't panic, but it's worth checking your sugars closely and chatting with your pharmacist or doctor before adding guarumo. Don't change your semaglutide dose on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Semaglutide page

“Semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy) lowers blood sugar, and so do most of the 256 supplements on this page, which is why I read this list with real vigilance rather than a shrug. Nearly all of the entries either add to its glucose-lowering effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia, or push sugar the other way and blunt it, as niaci…”

About Guarumo

What is Guarumo?

Guarumo
  • Type 2 diabetes / blood sugar support
  • High blood pressure
  • Cough, asthma, and bronchitis
  • Heart failure symptoms
  • Liver and rheumatic complaints

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic condition or take medication.
