Here's the short version: Alprazolam (Xanax) already slows down activity in your brain to calm anxiety, and that's also why it can make you drowsy, foggy, or unsteady on your feet. In one animal study, a water extract of guarumo had its own calming, muscle-relaxing effect on the nervous system. So the worry is that putting the two together could stack those effects and leave you more sedated than expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical and comes from animal research, not from people taking both. So I'm not raising alarm bells. Still, if you notice extra sleepiness, dizziness, or trouble concentrating, that's worth paying attention to. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
