Nifedipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Guarumo interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of guarumo leaf can lower blood pressure when administered intravenously to rats. Theoretically, concomitant use of antihypertensive drugs with guarumo might enhance therapeutic effects and increase the risk of hypotension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: nifedipine already works by relaxing your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Guarumo, a leaf tea used in Latin American tradition, may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Put the two together and they could push in the same direction, so your pressure might drop a bit more than expected.

If that happens, you could feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or notice your heart racing, especially when you stand up quickly. I want to be honest about the evidence though: this concern comes mostly from animal studies where extracts were injected, not from people drinking the tea. It's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, if you'd like to try guarumo, check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
