Here's the simple version: diphenhydramine (Benadryl) already makes a lot of people drowsy, since calming down the brain is part of how it works. Guarumo is a different story altogether, but in one animal study a water extract of the leaves seemed to slow down the central nervous system too, causing sluggish movement and muscle relaxation. So the worry is that stacking the two could pile on the sleepiness.

What that might look like: extra drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, slowed reactions, or feeling unsteady on your feet. This is only a theory based on animal data, not solid human evidence, so I don't want to overstate it. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you'll be driving.

Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
