Atorvastatin Calcium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for atorvastatin (Lipitor). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this cholesterol medicine. Higenamine has been shown, in test-tube studies only, to slow that enzyme down a little (about 21%). If that happened in real life, more atorvastatin could linger in your blood, which can raise the odds of muscle aches, weakness, or rarely more serious muscle problems, along with possible liver irritation.

The good news is this effect has only been seen in the lab, never in actual people, so it's largely theoretical and probably mild. Still, higenamine raises its own concerns for heart rate and blood pressure. I'd run any pre-workout or weight-loss product past your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with your statin.

What Is Atorvastatin Used For?

Atorvastatin is used alongside a healthy diet to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides (blood fats), and other harmful lipids, while raising HDL ("good") cholesterol. It treats primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), mixed dyslipidemia (mixed abnormal blood fats), hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides), and inherited conditions such as heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia — including in children aged 10 and older.

Beyond cholesterol control, atorvastatin is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina (chest pain) in adults with coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors for it — including adults with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for heart disease even without a confirmed heart disease diagnosis.
