Why this applies to Norgestrel

Norgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hops interacts with.

Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear norgestrel, the progestin in your mini-pill. Some lab and animal studies hint that hops might gently speed up that enzyme, which in theory could clear the hormone a little faster and slightly weaken it. With a birth control pill, a weaker effect could mean less reliable pregnancy protection or more breakthrough spotting.

The good news is the actual evidence here is thin. A human study using hops barely nudged a similar CYP3A4 medication (only about 8 percent), which isn't enough to worry over. So this is graded as a minor, mostly theoretical concern. Still, since dependable contraception matters, it's smart to mention any hops supplement to your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
