Hops and Rufinamide

Theoretically, concomitant use of hops with sedative drugs might cause additive sedation.
Some animal research shows that hops has sedative effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: rufinamide (Banzel) calms down overactive signaling in the brain to help control seizures, and one common side effect is feeling sleepy or sluggish. Hops, the same plant used in some sleep and relaxation blends, may also have a mild calming effect of its own. Put the two together and the worry is that the drowsiness could simply stack up, leaving you more tired, foggy, or unsteady than usual.

This is a theoretical concern, mostly based on animal studies, not strong human proof. It's not about hops changing your rufinamide levels, just an overlap in sleepiness. Casual amounts likely matter less than concentrated sleep supplements. Before adding hops, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so your seizure care stays on track.
