Simvastatin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the gist with Hu Zhang and simvastatin (Zocor). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break simvastatin down. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in lab studies may slow that enzyme a bit. If it did slow it, more simvastatin could linger in your body, which can raise the odds of muscle aches, weakness, or, rarely, more serious muscle problems.

The good news is this is theoretical. It's based on test-tube findings, and a human study using a hefty dose of resveratrol didn't force any changes to CYP3A4 medications. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since simvastatin is sensitive to this enzyme, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Hu Zhang.

About Simvastatin

What Is Simvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Zocor

Simvastatin tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to treat high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides, and certain inherited cholesterol disorders, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) in adults and children aged 10 and older, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) in adults.

In adults who already have coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes and are at high risk for heart events, simvastatin is also used to reduce the risk of death from heart disease, non-fatal heart attack, stroke, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Zocor is one brand-name product containing simvastatin and carries these same indications.
