Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which have the potential to widen blood vessels (vasodilation) and, in turn, possibly lower blood pressure. While there is a theoretical concern about the nitrate content in beets causing a blood pressure drop, research consistently indicates that any impact is generally minor and short-lived. However, it's crucial to be aware that blood pressure medications alone can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Combining them with beet supplements might heighten the risk of experiencing these side effects due to the temporary vasodilation caused by the nitrates in beet.

Here's the simple version for Opsumit (macitentan). This medicine relaxes and opens the blood vessels in your lungs to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. The beetroot nitrates in SuperBeets Heart Chews can also gently widen blood vessels for a short time. So you're not changing how your body breaks macitentan down, you're just stacking two things that both nudge blood pressure in the same direction.

For most people the beet effect is small and short-lived, which is why this is rated a minor interaction. The main thing to watch for is feeling a bit more dizzy, lightheaded, or headachy, especially when you stand up quickly. If you'd like to try these chews, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first, and stand up slowly until you know how you feel.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the situation with these beet chews and your Opsumit (macitentan). Each serving packs about 150mg of grape seed extract, and lab studies hint that grape seed extract may mildly slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4. Since your body uses CYP3A4 to clear macitentan, the theory is that the drug could clear a bit slower and build up slightly, which in turn could nudge up its usual side effects like headache, stuffy nose, swelling in the legs (fluid retention), and feeling more run-down or anemic.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes only from test-tube work, with no real-world cases ever reported, so it's rated minor and unlikely. Most people would be fine, but since macitentan is a serious medication for your lungs, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding these chews.

What Is Macitentan Used For?

Brand name: Opsumit

Macitentan tablets — sold under the brand name Opsumit — are used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group I), a serious condition where the blood pressure in the arteries supplying the lungs is abnormally high. The goal is to slow down how quickly the disease gets worse and to lower the chances of being hospitalized because of it.

In clinical studies, it was shown to be effective in adults with mostly moderate-to-severe PAH symptoms. Patients in those studies had PAH caused by unknown or inherited reasons, connective tissue disorders, or congenital heart disease with repaired heart shunts.
