Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which have the potential to widen blood vessels (vasodilation) and, in turn, possibly lower blood pressure. While there is a theoretical concern about the nitrate content in beets causing a blood pressure drop, research consistently indicates that any impact is generally minor and short-lived. However, it's crucial to be aware that blood pressure medications alone can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Combining them with beet supplements might heighten the risk of experiencing these side effects due to the temporary vasodilation caused by the nitrates in beet.

Here's the thing with Riociguat (Adempas): it works by relaxing and widening blood vessels in your lungs and elsewhere, which is great for treating that high lung-artery pressure, but it can also drop your overall blood pressure. Low blood pressure with this drug already shows up as dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when you stand up.

SuperBeets Heart Chews supply nitrates that can also relax blood vessels a bit. So stacking the two together may add up and make those dizzy, lightheaded moments more likely. The good news is that the beet effect is generally mild and short-lived, so this is a minor concern for most folks. Riociguat isn't a prodrug, so no flipped direction here. Still, before adding these chews, run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially when they're adjusting your dose.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the situation with these beet chews and your Riociguat (Adempas). Each two-chew serving has about 150mg of grape seed extract, and lab studies hint that it may gently slow down CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear Riociguat from your body. In theory, if that enzyme is blocked, a bit more Riociguat could hang around, which might nudge up side effects like low blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, or an upset stomach.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only test-tube data, and it has never actually been reported in real people. The risk is rated minor and unlikely. Still, since Riociguat already lowers blood pressure and beets can too, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding these chews.

Riociguat — sold as Adempas and under the generic name Riociguat — is used to treat adults with two conditions that cause dangerously high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.

  • Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH): Used after surgical treatment, or when surgery is not an option, to improve exercise capacity and functional class.
  • Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH): Used to improve exercise capacity, functional class, and to delay the condition from getting worse. It can be used alone or combined with certain other PAH medicines.
