Venlafaxine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Iboga interacts with.

Theoretically, taking iboga with serotonergic drugs might increase levels of serotonin, resulting in additive effects with serotonergic drugs.
Ibogaine, a constituent in iboga, has serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with iboga might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using iboga with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the concern with combining iboga and venlafaxine (Effexor). Venlafaxine already raises serotonin levels in your brain, that's how it eases depression and anxiety. Ibogaine, the main active compound in iboga, also pushes serotonin up. Stacking the two could add together and tip you toward too much serotonin activity.

When serotonin climbs too high, you can get what's called serotonin syndrome: agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, tremor, muscle twitching, or confusion. This is a theoretical worry based on how the two work, not from solid studies, so I don't want to alarm you. But iboga carries its own serious heart and safety risks, and it's illegal in the U.S. Please don't add it without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Here's the concern when Iboga and venlafaxine (Effexor) are combined: both can stretch out something called the QT interval, which is the time your heart takes to reset between beats. Venlafaxine has a known, though usually small, tendency to do this, especially at higher doses. Ibogaine, the active compound in Iboga, has been linked in several real-world case reports to serious QT prolongation and dangerous heart rhythms. Stacking the two could add up and raise that risk.

To be honest, this is based on anecdotal reports rather than strong studies, so the exact risk isn't fully pinned down. But given that Iboga has been tied to heart-related deaths, I would not take these together. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes.

Brand names: Effexor XR, Effexor

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
