Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Eravacycline
Eravacycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Iron interacts with.
Advise patients to take iron at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after tetracycline antibiotics. Concomitant use can decrease absorption of tetracycline antibiotics from the gastrointestinal tract by 50% to 90%.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's some good news that takes the worry out of this one. Eravacycline (Xerava) is given as an IV infusion through a vein, not as a pill you swallow. The classic iron and tetracycline problem happens in the gut, where iron grabs onto the antibiotic and keeps it from being absorbed. Since eravacycline skips the stomach entirely and goes straight into your bloodstream, oral iron won't be able to block it the same way.
This caution is really aimed at oral tetracyclines like doxycycline or minocycline. With the IV form, the timing rule (iron 2 hours before or 4 hours after) isn't the same concern. Still, it never hurts to mention all your supplements to your pharmacist or care team so they can confirm nothing else needs adjusting.

About Iron
What is Iron?
- Iron-deficiency anemia
- Low iron stores during pregnancy
- Fatigue from iron deficiency
- Heavy menstrual blood loss
- Restless legs syndrome (with low iron)
Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to make hemoglobin and carry oxygen in the blood. Supplements are mainly useful for treating or preventing iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia, ideally after a blood test confirms you are low. Because too much iron can be harmful, take it only when needed and under the guidance of a pharmacist or doctor.
About Eravacycline Injection
What Is Eravacycline Injection Used For?
Brand name: Xerava
Xerava (eravacycline) is used to treat complicated intra-abdominal infections (serious infections inside the abdomen, such as those following bowel problems or surgery) in adults 18 and older. It targets a range of bacterial types, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus species, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteroides species, and several others identified by lab testing.
Xerava is not approved for complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI). It should only be used when a bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected — using antibiotics unnecessarily contributes to antibiotic resistance.
