Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
LEVODOPA
Why this applies to Benserazide, Levodopa
Benserazide, Levodopa falls under LEVODOPA — the group Iron interacts with.
Advise patients to separate doses of levodopa and iron as much as possible. There is some evidence in healthy people that iron forms chelates with levodopa, reducing the amount of levodopa absorbed by around 50%. The clinical significance of this hasn't been determined.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with Madopar/Prolopa (that's levodopa paired with benserazide): when iron and levodopa hit your stomach at the same time, the iron can grab onto the levodopa and form a clump your gut can't absorb well. In healthy volunteers, this cut levodopa absorption by roughly half. Less levodopa getting in can mean your Parkinson's symptoms, like stiffness, slowness, or tremor, aren't controlled as well, or your usual dose just doesn't feel like it's working.
The good news is this is easy to manage. Spacing the two apart (often a couple of hours, with levodopa first) usually solves it. The real-world impact isn't fully nailed down, so don't change anything on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor on the best timing for you.
