Iron might decrease levels of quinolone antibiotics by reducing their absorption.
Advise patients to separate quinolone antibiotics and iron doses by at least 2 hours. Iron decreases the absorption of quinolones due to formation of insoluble complexes in the gastrointestinal tract.

Here's some good news that might ease your mind. The interaction we have on file is about iron binding to oral antibiotics in the gut, where the two form a clump that's hard to absorb. Doripenem (Doribax) is different. It's given as an injection straight into a vein, so it never has to pass through your stomach or intestines to work. That means iron in your gut has nothing to grab onto, and your antibiotic levels shouldn't drop.

Because of that, I wouldn't expect your oral iron supplement to weaken Doripenem's ability to fight your infection. Still, it's always smart to give your full medication and supplement list to the pharmacist or doctor managing your treatment so they can double-check for anything I can't see from here.

Iron might decrease levels of tetracycline antibiotics by reducing their absorption.
Advise patients to take iron at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after tetracycline antibiotics. Concomitant use can decrease absorption of tetracycline antibiotics from the gastrointestinal tract by 50% to 90%.

Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The interaction in our database is really about oral tetracycline antibiotics, where iron can grab onto the drug in your stomach and block it from being absorbed. But Doripenem (Doribax) isn't a tetracycline, and it isn't a pill you swallow. It's given as an injection into a vein, so it never has to pass through your gut to get into your bloodstream.

Because of that, an iron supplement you take by mouth shouldn't lower your Doripenem levels or weaken how well it fights your infection. The two simply don't meet in the stomach. As always, keep your pharmacist and the team managing your IV antibiotic in the loop about everything you take, including iron, just so your full list stays accurate.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
