Iron + Methyldopa
Methyldopa brand names: Aldomet, Methyldopa.
Iron has a moderate interaction with Methyldopa. Iron might decrease methyldopa levels by reducing its absorption.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
METHYLDOPA (Aldomet)
Advise patients to separate methyldopa and iron doses by at least 2 hours. Iron can decrease the absorption of methyldopa from the gastrointestinal tract through chelation, resulting in increases in blood pressure.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: when iron and your methyldopa (Aldomet) meet in your stomach, the iron can grab onto the blood pressure medicine and form a clump your body can't absorb well. Pharmacists call this chelation. The result is that less methyldopa actually gets into your system, so it may not lower your blood pressure as well as it should.
In real life, that could mean your numbers creep back up, or symptoms like headaches return. The good news is this is an easy fix. Most studies suggest separating the two by at least 2 hours keeps both working. Don't stop either one on your own, but do check with your pharmacist or doctor about the best timing and whether your blood pressure should be watched a little closer.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Iron or Methyldopa, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methyldopa page
“Alcohol is the entry I would read first. Methyldopa (Aldomet) can be hard on the liver by itself, and 38 of the 173 supplement and herbal ingredients here, beer and wine included, carry liver risks that could stack on top of that.”

About Iron
What is Iron?
- Iron-deficiency anemia
- Low iron stores during pregnancy
- Fatigue from iron deficiency
- Heavy menstrual blood loss
- Restless legs syndrome (with low iron)
Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to make hemoglobin and carry oxygen in the blood. Supplements are mainly useful for treating or preventing iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia, ideally after a blood test confirms you are low. Because too much iron can be harmful, take it only when needed and under the guidance of a pharmacist or doctor.
About Methyldopa
What Is Methyldopa Used For?
Brand names: Aldomet, Methyldopa
Methyldopa tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of complications that come with uncontrolled hypertension.

Methyldopa Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Methyldopa as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Iron — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
