Preliminary evidence shows that constituents of Job's tears might have hypoglycemic effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs that decrease blood glucose levels might increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.

Here's the simple version: Job's Tears may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Since metformin is already working to bring your glucose down, stacking the two together could, in theory, push your numbers a little lower than you'd expect.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is a theoretical concern based on how Job's Tears behaves in lab and early studies, not solid proof from people taking both. Eating Job's Tears as a food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplements are where I'd pay closer attention. If you take them together, just watch for signs of low blood sugar like shakiness, sweating, or feeling dizzy, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Metformin Used For?

Metformin — available as tablets, extended-release tablets, and an oral solution — is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, always as part of a plan that includes diet and exercise.

Metformin hydrochloride tablets and the oral solution are approved for adults and children 10 years and older. Extended-release tablets (including Fortamet, Glumetza, and Metformin Hydrochloride Extended Release) are approved for adults only. Riomet (oral solution) is approved for adults and children 10 years and older.
