Kiwi and Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina

Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that consuming kiwi reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. Theoretically, concomitant use of kiwi and antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure. These include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Rauzide combines two blood pressure lowering agents: bendroflumethiazide (a water pill) and rauwolfia serpentina (which calms the nervous system). Both already work to bring your blood pressure down. Kiwi isn't a prodrug situation here, there's no enzyme to worry about. The concern is simpler: some studies suggest kiwi itself may modestly lower blood pressure, so eating a lot of it could add to what your medication is already doing.

If your pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint, especially when standing up. To be fair, this is a theoretical interaction based on how things work, not strong proof. A kiwi or two as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated kiwi supplements would be a bigger question. If you notice any of those symptoms, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina page

“Rauzide combines two blood-pressure medicines, the thiazide diuretic bendroflumethiazide and rauwolfia serpentina, so anything that also lowers pressure, pulls off fluid, or shifts electrolytes lands on already sensitive ground. This page warrants real caution.”
