Kiwi and Betrixaban

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Betrixaban

Betrixaban falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that kiwi inhibits platelet aggregation. Theoretically, kiwi might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: betrixaban (Bevyxxa) is a blood thinner that works by blocking factor Xa, one of the proteins your body uses to form clots. Kiwi, separately, seems to make platelets (the cells that help blood stick together) a little less sticky. So in theory, eating a lot of kiwi while taking betrixaban could nudge your bleeding risk slightly higher, since both are gently working against clotting.

I want to be honest about the strength here. This concern is theoretical, based on how kiwi behaves in lab studies, not real-world reports of people bleeding from eating it. A normal serving of kiwi as food is very unlikely to be a problem. If you're using concentrated kiwi supplements, or you notice easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that won't stop, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
