Kiwi and Irbesartan, Hydrochlorothiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Irbesartan, Hydrochlorothiazide

Irbesartan, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that consuming kiwi reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. Theoretically, concomitant use of kiwi and antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure. These include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: CoAprovel pairs irbesartan, which relaxes your blood vessels, with hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. Both work to bring your blood pressure down. Some research suggests kiwi may nudge blood pressure a little lower too, so in theory eating a lot of it alongside your medicine could add up and push your numbers down further than expected.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or a bit faint, especially when standing up quickly. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how things work, not a proven, strong interaction. A normal serving or two of kiwi as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you eat large amounts daily or notice dizziness, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
