Here's the simple version: lemon balm has a mild calming, sedating effect of its own. Trimethadione (Tridione) is a seizure medicine that already works by quieting brain activity, so it can make you drowsy too. Put the two together and those calming effects may stack up. You might feel sleepier, more foggy, or less steady than usual.

This is mostly a theoretical concern based on lower quality studies and animal research, so it isn't a hard 'never combine.' Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially before you start a lemon balm supplement, since concentrated capsules are stronger than a cup of tea. Don't change your trimethadione on your own.

  • Trimethadione is used to control absence seizures (petit mal; a type of seizure in which there is a very short loss of awareness during which the person may stare straight ahead or blink his eyes and does not respond to others) when other medications will not work. Trimethadione is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
