Here's the gist with this combo. Both pseudoephedrine and terfenadine are carried around by a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a little pump in your gut wall. Lab studies (test tube only, not people) suggest licorice may rev up that pump. If that happened in real life, your body might absorb a bit less of these drugs, so the decongestant might feel weaker or your antihistamine might not work as well.

I want to be honest: this is theoretical and based only on lab data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Occasional culinary licorice or DGL products are unlikely to matter. Still, if you're using licorice regularly, run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred.
