ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Fidaxomicin
Fidaxomicin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Limosilactobacillus Fermentum interacts with.
Limosilactobacillus fermentum preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. fermentum preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: fidaxomicin (Dificid) is an antibiotic, and your probiotic Limosilactobacillus fermentum is made up of live bacteria. Antibiotics don't know the difference between helpful and harmful bugs, so taking them at the same time can kill off a good chunk of the probiotic before it ever gets to work. This doesn't make your fidaxomicin weaker or more risky, it just means the probiotic may not do much.
The good news is fidaxomicin mostly stays in your gut to fight C. diff, so this is a real but easily managed concern. A simple fix is spacing them out by at least two hours. This advice is theoretical, based on how the two work, so check with your pharmacist before adding any probiotic during a C. diff infection.

“If you are taking fidaxomicin (Dificid) for a Clostridioides difficile infection, supplements are not a side issue, because anything that weakens this drug risks letting a hard-to-treat infection come back. Three entries rated major top my concerns.”
