Lovage and Mannitol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Mannitol

Mannitol falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Lovage interacts with.

Theoretically, lovage root might interfere with diuretic therapy due to its aquaretic effects.
Some diuretics include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: lovage acts like a mild water pill, nudging your body to make more urine. Mannitol is also a diuretic, but a strong one used in hospital settings to pull excess fluid out of places like the brain or eyes, or to keep urine flowing in the kidneys. The worry on file is that stacking lovage's water-flushing effect on top of mannitol could add up, which may throw off your fluid balance and your levels of salts like sodium and potassium.

I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical, based on how the herb behaves rather than real cases. Also, mannitol is given in a controlled medical setting, so adding a supplement isn't really practical there. Still, don't start or stop anything on your own. Just mention lovage to your doctor or pharmacist so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Mannitol page

“American hellebore tops my worry list for anyone on mannitol (Osmitrol, Bronchitol), an osmotic diuretic used to draw fluid off the brain or, when inhaled, to clear mucus in cystic fibrosis. The plant's alkaloids drop blood pressure and slow the heart, a dangerous match for a drug that already shifts fluid and pressure quickly.”

About Lovage

What is Lovage?

  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Mild urinary tract flushing
  • Water retention (mild diuretic)
  • Coughs and congestion
  • Menstrual discomfort
  • Culinary flavoring

Lovage is a celery-like herb traditionally used for digestion, bloating, and as a mild diuretic to flush the urinary tract. Human evidence for these uses is very limited, and while culinary amounts are generally well tolerated, concentrated supplements and the essential oil should be used cautiously. Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it.
