Theoretically, mucilage in marshmallow might impair absorption of oral drugs.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with marshmallow and Effient (prasugrel): the slippery gel (mucilage) in marshmallow can, in theory, coat your stomach and gut and slow down how well a swallowed pill is absorbed. If that happened with Effient, your body might take in a little less of the dose, which could mean slightly weaker protection against the clots it's meant to prevent. Since you're taking Effient after a heart procedure, you don't want anything nudging it in the wrong direction.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on how the fiber works, not something proven in real patients. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your Effient first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the marshmallow. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Theoretically, marshmallow flower might have antiplatelet effects.
Animal research suggests that marshmallow flower extract has antiplatelet effects. However, the root and leaf of marshmallow, not the flower, are the plant parts most commonly found in dietary supplements. Theoretically, use of marshmallow flower with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs can have additive effects, and might increase the risk for bleeding in some patients.

Here's the honest picture with Effient (prasugrel) and marshmallow. Effient already keeps your platelets from clumping, which is exactly why it protects your heart after a stent. The theory on file is that marshmallow flower may have a mild platelet-thinning effect of its own, so stacking the two could, in principle, nudge your bleeding risk up a bit (think easier bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that takes longer to stop).

That said, I'd keep this in perspective. This is theoretical, drawn from animal data, and it points to the flower rather than the root or leaf that most supplements actually use. Marshmallow root tea or lozenges for a sore throat are unlikely to be a real problem. Still, because Effient is a serious blood thinner, run any marshmallow supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, and report unusual bleeding.

Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. As with any supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.

About Prasugrel

What Is Prasugrel Used For?

Brand name: Prasugrel

Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.

Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
