ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Effient
Effient falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Caffeine interacts with.
Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, it might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents; however, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Effient (prasugrel) is a powerful blood thinner that keeps your platelets from clumping together and forming clots. Here's the thing to know: caffeine has been shown in lab studies to have a mild platelet-slowing effect of its own. So in theory, pairing your morning coffee or an energy drink with Effient could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher, meaning easier bruising, longer bleeding from small cuts, or nosebleeds.
I'll be honest with you though, this is based only on test-tube and animal research, and it has never actually been reported in people. Normal everyday coffee or tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. If you're piling on heavy caffeine through pills or energy drinks, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Effient page
“Effient (prasugrel) keeps platelets from forming clots, usually after a stent or a heart attack, and I would not pair supplements with it casually. Roughly 200 ingredients on this list can thin the blood further and raise bleeding risk, including two of the five rated major.”

About Caffeine
What is Caffeine?
- Mental alertness and reducing fatigue
- Improving athletic performance
- Headache and migraine relief
- Boosting focus and concentration
- Weight loss aid
Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and many other plants and products. In moderate amounts it can boost alertness and reduce tiredness for most healthy adults, but too much can cause jitteriness, a racing heart, and sleep problems. Pregnant women and people with heart conditions or anxiety should be especially careful and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
About Prasugrel
What Is Prasugrel Used For?
Brand name: Prasugrel
Prasugrel is used to reduce blood clot–related heart events, including clots forming in a stent (stent thrombosis). It is for people with acute coronary syndrome who are going to be treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, a procedure to open blocked heart arteries).
This includes people with unstable angina or a non-ST-elevation heart attack (NSTEMI), and people with an ST-elevation heart attack (STEMI) treated with primary or delayed PCI. Both Effient and generic Prasugrel tablets carry this use.
