Selenium may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research suggests that taking selenium 10 mcg/kg/day can increase bleeding times by increasing prostacyclin production, which inhibits platelet activity. Other clinical research suggests that taking selenium 75 mcg daily, in combination with ascorbic acid 600 mg, alpha-tocopherol 300 mg, and beta-carotene 27 mg, reduces platelet aggregation.

Here's the situation with Effient (prasugrel) and selenium. Effient already does a powerful job of keeping your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly why your doctor prescribed it after your heart procedure. Selenium, in higher supplement doses, may have a mild blood-thinning effect of its own by nudging platelets to be less sticky. Stack that on top of Effient (and the aspirin you're likely also taking), and you could theoretically see a bit more bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that's slower to stop.

I want to be honest though: this concern comes mostly from lab and early research, not strong human studies, so it's a possible issue rather than a proven one. Everyday food amounts of selenium aren't the worry. Concentrated supplements are. Please run any selenium supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, and report unusual bleeding right away.

About Prasugrel

What Is Prasugrel Used For?

Brand name: Prasugrel

Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.

Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
