Methylsynephrine and Metoproterenol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS

Why this applies to Metoproterenol

Metoproterenol falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Methylsynephrine interacts with.

Methylsynephrine has beta agonist activity. Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of methylsynephrine might increase the cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists. Beta-adrenergic agonists include albuterol (Ventolin, Proventil), metaproterenol (Alupent), terbutaline (Brethine, Bricanyl), and isoproterenol (Isuprel).
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: metaproterenol (Alupent) is itself a stimulant-type medicine that opens your airways by acting on beta receptors. Methylsynephrine works in a similar way, nudging your heart and blood pressure up. So if you stack the two together, you're essentially doubling up on that same kind of stimulation. The worry is added strain on your heart, things like a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, shakiness, and a bump in blood pressure.

To be fair, this concern is theoretical and based on how these drugs work rather than hard studies. Still, methylsynephrine isn't an approved or trustworthy ingredient and is best avoided anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything like this in.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metoproterenol page

“Someone using metoproterenol (Alupent) for asthma or COPD is taking a beta-agonist, a drug that opens airways by stimulating the same receptors that speed the heart, and every one of the 15 supplement interactions on file works through that pathway. Twelve are caffeine sources, everyday things like coffee and tea, where large amounts c…”

About Methylsynephrine

What is Methylsynephrine?

  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Boosting energy
  • Athletic and workout performance
  • Appetite control

Methylsynephrine (also called oxilofrine) is a synthetic stimulant sometimes added to weight-loss and pre-workout products, but it is not a legal or approved dietary ingredient in the United States. It has been linked to serious heart and blood pressure problems, and there is no good evidence it is safe or effective for these uses, so it is best avoided.
