Methylsynephrine and Pseudoephedrine Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Pseudoephedrine Sulfate

Pseudoephedrine Sulfate falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Methylsynephrine interacts with.

Methylsynephrine has cardiac stimulant effects. Theoretically, taking methylsynephrine with other stimulant drugs might increase the risk of hypertension and adverse cardiovascular effects.
Some stimulant drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, diethylpropion (Tenuate), methylphenidate, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others), and many others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both of these act like stimulants. Pseudoephedrine already narrows blood vessels and can nudge up your heart rate and blood pressure, which is how it clears a stuffy nose. Methylsynephrine works in a similar adrenaline-like way. Stack them together and those effects can add up, so you may notice a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, headache, or a higher blood pressure reading than usual.

To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on how the two behave rather than firm studies. Still, methylsynephrine isn't a legal or approved supplement in the U.S. and has been tied to serious heart issues, so I'd steer clear of it, especially alongside a decongestant. If you have any heart or blood pressure history, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pseudoephedrine Sulfate page

“Most people reach for pseudoephedrine (Afrinol, Drixoral N.D.) for a stuffy nose without much thought, often with their usual coffee, tea, or a weight-loss supplement nearby, and that casual pairing is where the trouble sits. About Methylsynephrine

What is Methylsynephrine?

  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Boosting energy
  • Athletic and workout performance
  • Appetite control

Methylsynephrine (also called oxilofrine) is a synthetic stimulant sometimes added to weight-loss and pre-workout products, but it is not a legal or approved dietary ingredient in the United States. It has been linked to serious heart and blood pressure problems, and there is no good evidence it is safe or effective for these uses, so it is best avoided.
