Amlodipine Benzoate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. Theoretically, phellodendron might also reduce blood pressure.

Here's the simple version: amlodipine already relaxes your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Phellodendron contains berberine, which may gently nudge blood pressure down too. So if you take them together, the two could add up and lower your numbers a bit more than amlodipine alone. One small study actually saw extra blood pressure lowering when berberine was paired with amlodipine.

For most people this is mild, and the evidence here is mostly theoretical, so I don't want to alarm you. But if your pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or flushed, especially when standing up quickly. Before adding phellodendron, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your readings.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for amlodipine (Katerzia). Your body clears this blood pressure medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab tests and some early human studies suggest can slow that same enzyme down a bit. If amlodipine is cleared more slowly, more of it can linger in your blood, which could nudge its effects up.

In real life that might mean a little more dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, swelling in your ankles, or a lower blood pressure than you expect. That said, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, not a well-proven problem, so don't panic. Just let your pharmacist or doctor know before combining them, and keep an eye on how you feel.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Katerzia

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
