Here's the simple version: amlodipine already relaxes your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that may also lower blood pressure on its own. Put the two together and the effects could stack up, pushing your numbers lower than intended.

If that happens, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint when you stand up, or more of the ankle swelling and flushing that amlodipine can already cause. I want to be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave in the lab rather than real patient reports. Amlodipine is not a prodrug, so this is about added effect, not changed metabolism. Still, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Katerzia

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
